The ability to track and understand El Niño is further complicated by cutbacks in monitoring systems. Professor Roger Stone highlights the reduced measurement systems over the past few years, making it harder to track the development of El Niño events.
"We're missing crucial data points, which limits our ability to forecast and prepare for these events. It's a concern when we're already dealing with the uncertainties of climate change," he adds.
Beyond El Niño
Australia's weather is influenced by a multitude of climate factors, not just El Niño. The interplay between the Indian Ocean, the Southern Ocean, and local water temperatures also shapes weather patterns. This complexity means that while El Niño may bring drier conditions, other factors can influence the outcome.
"It's a reminder that climate is a complex system. We can't attribute every weather event solely to El Niño. It's a delicate dance of various factors," says Dr. Taschetto.

Interestingly, the strength of El Niño doesn't always correlate with its impact on Australia. Professor Stone points out that the last super El Niño had minimal effect on most of the country, despite its intensity. This highlights the intricate nature of the Pacific climate system and its influence on Australian weather patterns.
"It's a reminder that we can't predict the future solely based on past events. Climate change adds a new layer of complexity, making it even more challenging to forecast the impacts of El Niño," he concludes.
